From: "Bretthauer, Thomas" To: "'Visvanath Ratnaweera'" Cc: Alberto Pianon Subject: AW: Amilo D - 3D acceleration for X Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 13:08:25 +0200 Hi Visvanath, back to the 3D issue... I checked the utah-glx drivers from http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net for XFree86 3.3.x and they DO NOT support the S3 Twister, however, older Savage3D chips seem to be supported. So, Alberto is right, right now there is no free 3D acceleration for the S3 Twister chip which is in your AMILO D-Series. Could you please update your homepage regarding this issue. The Accelerated X Summit Line from Xi Graphics (www.xig.com) does have the 3D support of the S3 Twister embedded chip with the Laptop (LX) Series Graphics Drivers. Thanks, Thomas ================================================================================ From: Alberto Pianon To: visvanath at ratnaweera.net Subject: Amilo D - 3D acceleration for X Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 16:45:04 +0200 X-Mailer: KMail [version 1.3.1] I'VE FOUND A DRIVER (that works on an alternative X server) THAT SUPPORTS 3D ACCELERATION on Amilo D, but it isn't free! You can find a demo (that stops and automatically restart after 25 mins) with manuals here: http://www.xig.com/Pages/Atop/Demos-SummitLine/Demos-LX-PlatinumLinux.html First you have to identify the graphic chipset installed on your Amilo D (you can use the attached DOS program - S3id.exe, found in the "S3 graphics" site) On my Amilo D 6500 (PIII 1Ghz) the output is the following: "S3 Chip Identify Utility Version 1.00.07 Related CR register information: CR2D = 0x8D CR2E = 0x01 CR2F = 0x02 CR30 = 0xE1 CR36 = 0x7F CR5E = 0x00 CR68 = 0xFF CR6F = 0xEE CR72 = 0x07 CR73 = 0x1F CR92 = 0x00 CRB0 = 0xF7 S3 Video Chip: Twister (380/387) Display Memory Size: 32M Display Memory Type: SDRAM" So it appears not to be a Savage4 32MB, but a ProSavage Twister 32MB (important: you have to set to 32MB the VGA memory in the BIOS; the default is 8MB) I found that this chipset is supported by the XIG X server, and I've installed it (It works on my SuSE 7.3). The installation is quite simple: I've had only a small problem installing the xsvctest program, and I've solved it making a link to the right location of autoconfig.h. Beside I've found that it isn't necessary to follow all the steps of the manual. After you removed "mesa" and installed "xsvc" (follow the manual), you can do the following steps (IMPORTANT: it works only on SuSE 7.3!): CTRL+ALT+F1 login as root # init 3 # cd (directory where you put the rpm file) # rpm -i Summit_LX-Platinum-2.1.9.i386.rpm # Xsetup choose ProSavage Twister 32MB driver; LCD 1024x768 monitor; AGP 4x/2x/1x (I'm still testing settings for other parameters) # Xaccel this tests the X server If it works, you can stop it with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE # init 5 Then you have to run as root (otherwise you can't save settings) "Xsetup" from KDE, and set to 1.000 the Gamma Correction (default is 1.400). Back to XFree86: CTRL+ALT+F1 login as root # init 3 # rpm -e Summit_LX-Platinum-2.1.9 # sax2 choose your favorite settings # init 5 Some 3D games doesn't work (but maybe I didn't choose the right settings), some others seems to work quite well (for example, Tux Racer works fine, but when I choose some races the game crashes). Beside I've got problems with fonts, expecially in StarOffice 5.2 (maybe I have to set better the fonts' paths) and with some programs, like Acrobat Reader. The full version (Platinum) of XIG X Server is quite expensive: 179$. XIG seems to give assistance for free on the demo version... I'll try it! If you are interested, you can test this driver too and we can keep in contact to exchange tips and informations. Kind regards Alberto Pianon Vicenza - Italy P.S. The latest S3 Savage driver for Xfree86 v.4 is available here (fixed the StarOffice and OpenOffice hangs, but still no support for 3D acceleration): http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html I tested XFree86 3.3.6 drivers on my Amilo D 6500, but they don't support 3D acceleration (the answer you received about it from Fujitsu-Siemens Augsburg DE is probably wrong). The Utah-GLX-Project (http://utah-glx.soureforge.net) writes 3D-support for S3 Savage, but can not say whether Amilo D is covered. I'will check and let you know. Otherwise 3D looks bleak for S3 Savage.] [...] Grüsse aus Augsburg, Thomas Bretthauer
