From: LORD Stephen Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 14:41:27 +0200 Visvanath, Memory: The documentation with the Amilo D is not quite definitive about adding memory. For the record Ive added a 256MB SO-DIMM and it works fine uder Linux. Just an update on the DVD playback. So far as I can see the main problem seems to be using the Xvideo extensions with the version of the twister on some Amilo D series machines. I seem to have gone in circles, browsed the net and only come up with the fact that the Xvideo extension crashes under 24 bit colour. This gives a complete hang of the machine, can't telnet in and kill it and only the power-switch seems to work. Running using XShm allows 24 bit playback but with lost frames. The CDR-DVD is mounted under IDE-SCSI for CD writing, I don't think this is optimal for DVD playback although Im using the raw dvd device. Reliable DVD playback is the only thing preventing me completely getting rid of the XP partition which I only need for DVD playback. I've upgraded to Mandrake 8.2 with Kernel 2.4.18 and XFree 4.2.0. I'm using the savage driver from XFree presently as the binary from S3 is for 4.1 although Ive read on the Internet that its compatable with 4.2. Other problems Ive had were after installing the Acqua theme under KDE 2.2, everything worked well except the menu-bar which blanked out the menus, they could only be seen by howevering the mouse over them. I suspect this was a transparency issue since if the menu's were animated they came out (very slowly) OK but once the animation finished went black on black. This now works under KDE 3.1 and XFree 4.2.0. regards Steve Lord, Paris
